초록

This research explores the causal role of investing in capability building for the sake of managing the security dilemma of abandonment and entrapment dynamics in a post-unipolar era. Allies’ defense burden-sharing efforts are increasingly focused on building their own capabilities to contribute to the evolution of a division of labor with their senior partner and the reshaping of the contours of regional security architecture, which may help alleviate their heightened fear of abandonment by the US. As the junior ally contributes further to the network’s deterrent force, the creation of security networks promoted in bilateral, multilateral, and regional settings would necessarily thicken. Its success depends in part on how well the network’s individual participants are able to emphasize an inclusive concept of security cooperation that would feed directly into the maximization of their strategic autonomy. This would in turn serve to help the junior ally prepare against both the possibility of being dragged into an unwanted conflict with China and against the prospect of America’s withdrawal.
