본 연구는 유럽 내 난민 문제로 발생하는 정치적 사회적 갈등을 분석하고 이를 다루는 데 있어 문화예술이 수행하는 역할을 논의했다. 유럽의 난민 문제는 인도주의적 차원에서 머무르지 않고 난민을 둘러싼 편견과 갈등이 확장되어 유럽 내 사회구조적 문제로 자리잡고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 난민이라는 난제를 ‘예술이 어떻게 개인의 성찰을 불러일으키는지의 문제’와 연계하여 풀어보고자 했다. 예술과 문화적 체험은 자신을 인식하고, 타인과 관계 맺으며, 자신의 가치 체계에 도전을 불어넣기도 하고, 타인에 대한 공감력을 강화하기 때문이다. 연구에서는 이를 위해 ‘공감(sympathy)’과 ‘마음 이론(theory of Mind)’ 관점에서 예술의 역할을 살펴보는 이론화 작업을 시행하고, 이를 바탕으로 난민과 사회통합에서 문화예술이 사회적 관계 회복을 위해 어떻게 접근해야 하는지를 구체화했다. 연구 결과, 예술은 난민 문제 해결의 핵심적인 도구는 아니지만, 사회적 담론을 형성하고 구조적 문제를 완화하는 데 중요한 매개체로 작동할 수 있음을 밝혔다. 본 연구는 문화예술이 난민 문제를 다루는 다양한 접근법과 사례를 통해, 난민과 공존할 수 있는 사회적기반을 구축하고 지속 가능한 해결책을 모색하는 데 기여할 가능성을 제시했다.
Abstract
This study examines the political and social conflicts arising from the refugee crisis in Europe and explores the mediating role of culture and the arts in addressing these challenges. Far from being solely a humanitarian issue, the refugee crisis has evolved into a structural societal problem, with prejudice and conflict surrounding refugees deepening cultural and political divides. By shedding light on the duality of refugee policies in European societies and the cultural tensions they exacerbate, this study highlights the potential of culture and the arts to promote social integration and foster mutual understanding through the lived experiences of refugees. Art transcends a simplistic approach of viewing refugees as mere objects of compassion. It provides a platform to foster empathy, critique the hypocrisy surrounding refugee issues, and facilitate their recognition as integral members of society. While not a definitive solution to the refugee crisis, art serves as a vital medium for shaping social discourse and mitigating structural inequities. Through an analysis of diverse artistic and cultural initiatives addressing refugee-related issues, this study underscores the potential of arts and culture to build a foundation for coexistence and to inspire sustainable, inclusive solutions to one of the most pressing global challenges of our time.
