Abstract
This study investigates the affective political strategies employed by the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), focusing on the politicization of emotions such as fear, anger, and hatred. The analysis explores how AfD has responded to social crises—including the Eurozone crisis, the refugee influx, welfare concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic—by transforming these issues into emotionally charged narratives. Drawing on affect theory, framing theory, and political alienation, this research examines the temporal evolution and strategic use of affective discourse in AfD’s rhetoric. Using a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative frame analysis and quantitative keyword and sentiment analysis, the study demonstrates how emotions were systematically mobilized to generate political support. Fear stimulated defensive reactions, anger fueled anti-establishment sentiment, and hatred justified exclusionary policies. These emotions did not operate in isolation but interacted to reinforce AfD’s populist narratives. The study contributes to affective political theory by highlighting the central role of emotion in right-wing populist mobilization. It also calls for future research on inclusive affective strategies that emphasize hope, empathy, and solidarity as democratic counter-narratives.
