Abstract

In all the Hindu discipline-traditions, yogic posture (āsana) has been handed down as the representation of the sublimeness of Hindu practitioners. But the āsana as a step of Yoga-disciplines(aṣṭāṅga) has failed to give ground for its justification. It was originated from the lack of discipline-physiology. Āsanas (sitting postures) set as a step of praxis (aṣṭāṅga) in Yogasūtra can be elucidated by discipline-physiology which is based on the physiological principles of prāṇa and nāḍī, corresponding qi(氣) and meridian(經脈) of the oriental medicine, respectively. Like prāṇāyāma, āsana consists of the same physiological context in Yoga-discipline. Āsana and prāṇāyāma developed the physiological principles founded on the prāṇa and nāḍī. Since the body-heat flows between the internal organs(五臟六腑) and the surface of body (or to the ends of the limbs), it has a strong tendency to ascend to the upper body. Āsana makes body-heat(熱氣) which overheated in upper body go down to the abdomen. It is reasonable to say that the most important effect of controlling the fire (agni, 火) in āsana is digestive fire (jaṭharāgni) generated in Maṇipura-cakra, which is located in navel. According to Haṭha(yoga)pradīpikā, the digestive fire located in abdomen acts to purify nāḍīs(merdians, 經脈). Then the next step, prāṇāyāma purifies the nāḍīs associated with respiratory and reserves prāṇa by doing Kumbhakas. At the same time, the accumulation of prāṇa acts to amplify the fire in the body(dehānala) and finally to awaken Kuṇḍalinī. The physiology of Yoga is the science of Kuṇḍalinī, which is awaken by the amplified heat in the body. In saṃyama, all nāḍīs were absorbed in the center of body and Anāhata-cakra or Ājñā-cakra.
