Abstract

In Indian Philosophy Advaita Vedānta school may well be called to be a Champion of ‘Discourse on the Virtual’, since this school establishes the virtual that is unexplicable either to be real or to be unreal by means of such various terms as māyā, avidyā, mithyā etc. What this school regards the world as virtual reality aims to deny not merely the reality of the world but the unreality of the world. Although discourse on the virtual in Vedānta is basically about deception, the virtual carries out a constructive and positive role which goes beyond that discourse. As a matter of fact, ignorance or the virtual plays a substantial role in relation to mokṣa, whereas Brahman or the real a symbolical role. Thus Vedānta school can advance towards such logical way, ‘the virtual remove the virtual in the virtual’, just by knowing ignorance that is the object of annihilation or by ‘knowing virtuality’. In Vedānta what is called ‘knowing virtuality’ indicates in its axiological dimension ‘making meaningless of making meaning’. It consists of two logical courses, namely, knowing the world as the result of making meaning, and knowing that meaningful world as a meaningless thing. Besides, these courses are exactly corresponded with the traditional Vedāntic methods, i.e., false attribution and retraction (adhyāropa-apavāda). Consequently, ‘knowing virtuality’ in Vedānta is an intentional ‘imaginary play’ occurred in the epistemic domain. This wonder play, what is causing the real result, is not of God but of human, represented in the stage of the world and applied to the world itself.
