Abstract

The philosophy of Advaita Vedānta which has a distinct tradition in relation to interpretation on the Scripture also shows us strong rational factors apart from speculative and religious colors. Those factors can be soundly known if the followings are to be examined with a special notice on 'argument' that is an apparent aspect of rationality. First, if the authority of the Scripture is accepted to be symbolic, a crack in which 'reason' can intervene is able to be easily and flexibly found in the Veda-fundamentalism. Second, the Scripture Itself has inevitably to include argument, because It is destined to speak what cannot be speak. Third, argument runs essentially parallel with interpretation in the way that the methods of the Scripture are re-employed in the process of Its interpretation. Fourth, argument in the tradition of interpretation on the Scripture is a sign that informs Its weakened authority as well as an essential means that reinforces Its authority. In these respects, it can be assumed that argument in Advaita Vedānta may have the following characteristics. First, it is a probable fact that argument had never been subject to 'revelation' absolutely, and that the independence of argument had been actually permitted and even encouraged. Second, although the best position of argument is said to be a harmony with 'revelation', argument strengthens It in reality. Third, argument also carries out a sort of reflective function with reference to 'revelation' even in the course of discredit on 'reason'. The authority of the Scripture cannot rightly be considered without presupposing argument itself which justifies It. Further, argument of the Scripture reiterating in interpretation is not a repeated one of the very same argument, since the Scripture as the pedagogical is constantly relocated by the Scripture as the performative, or since the authority as the given is reappeared as the accepted.
