Abstract

Although Vedānta-sāra is one of the best known epitomes in Advaita Vedānta, the fact that it has been influenced by Sāṃkhya-Yoga often undermines its historical importance in the circle of Advaita Vedānta. However, it is not justifiable that this epitome alone is charged with the mixture of the thoughts of Sāṃkhya-Yoga and Advaita Vedānta, as the influence of the former on the latter has been started since Śaṅkara and has been gradually enlarged after Śaṅkara. The influence of Sāṃkhya on Vedānta-sāra can be summarized as the similarities between ajñāna and Prakṛti, of the way of evolution and the evolutes, and of the method of attaining mokṣa or kaivalya. And the influence of Yoga on Vedānta-sāra is seen in the concepts of samādhi and aṣṭāṅga-yoga. Nevertheless, so far as Vedānta-sāra teaches consistently the identity of jīva and Brahman which is the core of the tradition of Advaita Vedānta, it is intelligible to say that Vedānta-sāra strongly adheres to that tradition. This point is to be proved by the methods of adhyāropa-apavāda and jahadajahallakṣaṇā, and by the emphasis on abheda. In fact, while some of Sāṃkhya-Yoga thoughts in Vedānta-sāra function partially as a modified forms, Advaita Vedānta thoughts in it make up the organic whole throughout the entire texts. After all, Vedānta-sāra is the case of which Advaita Vedānta takes the initiative in accepting for Sāṃkhya-Yoga, and in view of this fact it plays ironically the role of strengthening the tradition of Advaita Vedānta.
