Abstract

In India, poetical prosody and various figures of speech(alaṃkāra) have been applied not only in pure literature, but also in philosophical or religious works for delivering their thoughts. In the field of classical Indian poetics, alaṃkāra, after being appeared in Nāṭyaśāstra, has been played an important role as an element of versification. By the 7th century CE, it also has been treated actively by many scholars as poetical theory as well as a rhetoric skill. Among those figures, especially, Bhāmaha imbued alaṃkāra with special significance in his work Kāvyālaṃkāra(KĀ). He held that alaṃkāra mattered most in poetry and he brought rasa, which had been one of the most significant themes in poetics, also under alaṃkāra. According to the classification of alaṃkāra which is represented in KĀ, there are two kinds of alaṃkāra, that is, śabdālaṃkāra and arthālaṃkāra. The former one is made by sound or words, on the other hand, the latter is made by meaning. Śabdālaṃkāra which is dealt in this paper is subdivided into two kinds, anuprāsa and yamaka. They arouse poetic inspiration not only with rhymes or repetition of similar varṇas or words(anuprāsa) but also with repetitive homonymic pādas, repetition in serial āvalīs and in whole sentences(yamaka) as well. This paper, at first, introduces Bhāmaha’s role in the field of alaṃkāra school briefly and then analyzes composition of KĀ by each pariccheda and thematically. In succession, among various figures of speech, I have examined classifications and examples of śabdālaṃkāra in detail which show its practical applications especially represented in first 20 verses of KĀ. I hope, though tenuously, this research could energize future studies on figures of speech in Korea as a method of understanding texts.
