한국 한시의 소리미학에 대한 연구

Abstract

This paper analyzes the aesthetics of sound in hansi – works of poetry written in Classical Chinese by Korean poets – by examining its major schools, noteworthy poets, and selected individual works. In doing so, it argues that the sound in hansi, when it is read aloud, is not merely a phonetic translation of the letters, but that it significantly contributes to the semantic delivery of the poem and amplifies the sensory experience of the work. Section one discusses the universality of the topic of sound in poetry and establishes the framework for applying this topic to hansi. Section two discusses the aesthetics of sound in poetry as a major criterion for evaluating a poet’s work or for historically tracing changing styles. Specifically, it examines individual works from two schools of hansi, the Haedong Gangseo Sipa (Korean Jiangxi Poetry Faction) and Samdangpa (Three Tang Faction). Section three presents exemplary works of both prose and poetry where the effects of sound are particularly well crafted; this section concludes by analyzing the techniques used in the selected works in detail. Through these analyses the paper explains the heights of literary achievement reached by those works that employ effective phonetic arrangements for greater semantic impact. It is hoped that the perspective and the examples provided in this paper, in analyzing sound and its aesthetics in poetry, would spread further not only in studying hansi, but poetry in general.
