Abstract

Classical Sanskrit poetics (kāvya) recommends the application and use of various rhetorical methods or figures of speech (alaṃkāra) in relation to the use of poetic language. The poets have applied various literary devices according to the theories of kāvya-śāstra tradition, therefore proper understanding of the application of alaṃkāras helps the reader not only to understand rich hints about suggestive allusions under the surface, but also to enhance the aesthetic appreciation of the expressions. Even though the alaṃkāras as literary devices have been theoretically established by various scholars for a long time, these are not only left as a theory, but are found as practical techniques for versificational usage. Accordingly, this paper analyzes the application examples in actual literary work based on my previous studies which have been dealt with the theories of alaṃkāras in the Kāvyālaṃkāra (KA) of Bhāmaha. I would like to consider how those alaṃkāras have been applied practically through citation and analysis of the verses from the drama Nāgānanda (Nāg) written in a similar period as KA. Among classical Sanskrit poetry, Bhāmaha is regarded as a pioneer of the alaṃkāra school, while on the other hand, Nāg is a Sanskrit play written by Harṣa Vardhana (reigned 606-647), who ruled northern India around the 7th century. Nāg is considered to be one of the best examples of a text that can help one to grasp the proper and simple usages of alaṃkāras, and a text which can easily be understood in comparison to other works. Throughout the Nāg, there are many straightforward examples of how the different aspects of alaṃkāras have been utilized—especially the aspects of arthālaṃkāras, such as metaphors, comparisons, similes, puns, and more.
