Abstract
The argument on the interpretation on the metaphor of the issue of cognition to a lamp is about whether a lamp illuminates itself or not. Realists have a position that a lamp cannot light itself, but Buddhist idealist (Yocācāravādin) insists a lamp is possible to light itself. In other words, in case that knowledge is cognitive object, the realists require the other cognitive subject to cognize it, the idealist, however, does not have to suppose the other cognitive means except knowledge itself. The realists deny basically causality between two separated real things, so it is impossible to infer a thing from the other thing because there is not any relationship between each other. They introduce the concept of inherence into their inference theory to solve inconsistency that reason and premise do not have relationship to infer one from the other. For example, when we infer fire from smoke, they say that an appearance climbs that is an experienced attribute of smoke causes us to infer the other thing, fire that is an unexperienced attribute of smoke. On the other hand, Buddhist idealist, not to admit outside-real being, says, though smoke and fire are different, they are same in terms that both of all are nothing more than conceptual construction, so inference is possible from smoke to fire because smoke and fire are under relationship of accompaniment. To conclude, the metaphor of cognition to a lamp, that is, in case that knowledge is cognitive object, on the means of cognition, the realists apply the cognition by manas for the means of cognition. In addition, there is inherence between cognitive object and subject. Buddhist idealist, however, just regards cognition itself as the means of cognition in terms that the result of cognition is the understanding of the cognitive object, and the result stands on the basis of identity of accompaniment between reason and premise.
