Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of related industry density within commercial districts on the survival of small businesses in Incheon during the COVID-19 pandemic. To define commercial districts as spatial unit of analysis, a clustering detection algorithm was applied to redefine commercial cluster across Incheon. Unlike previous studies that reply on administrative boundaries as their spatial unit of analysis, our approach can capture economically meaningful commurcial cluster allowing us to analyze the actual business dynamics. Based on these newly defined districts, a network was constructed by looking at co-location frequency between amenity types, where amenity types were represented as nodes and co-location frequencies as links. The network-based distances were used as weights to calculate the related amenity density for each commercial district. This metric quantifies the extent to which a given amenity type is co-located with other related amenities within the same district. The study employs multiple regression analysis, logistic regression analysis, and a logistic discrete hazard frailty model to examine how related amenity density within a district influenced amenity-specific survival rates during the COVID-19 period. The findings indicate that higher related amenity density within a commercial district was associated with higher survival rates during the pandemic. The findings highlight that the composition of the small businesses ecosystem critically affects the survival of each small business in the commercial cluster, implying that policy makers should develop policy tools focusing not only individual small business but also at the level of small businesses clusters.
