Abstract
This study investigates the literary world of Nongpo Jeong Mun-bu, widely known as a commander of the righteous army, by focusing on his poems on paintings collected in the Nongpojip to illuminate his identity as a literatus. Acknowledging the limitation that the original paintings are not extant, this study centers on analyzing how he interpreted the paintings and projected his thoughts through the textual evidence of his poems. His jehwasi transcend mere visual description, representing an active creative process that used paintings as a medium for thought by reconstructing narratives, interjecting historical commentary, and allegorically projecting contemporary reality. An analysis by subject matter reveals these characteristics more clearly. His poems on paintings of historical figures exhibit the qualities of historical poetry, capturing his anguish over the dilemma of serving in office versus entering reclusion and offering critical historical perspectives. His poems on the Four Gentlemen, focusing exclusively on bamboo, function as a self-portrait embodying a scholar's integrity through images of stillness and breakage. Furthermore, through works on the Yoji-yeondo and bird-and-flower paintings, he expressed a yearning for transcendence alongside a sharp satire of a reality rife with hypocrisy. Jeong Mun-bu's painting poetry reveal a literary world that combines the pragmatic awareness of a military official who experienced war with the refined aesthetic consciousness and critical spirit of a literatus. This study is significant in that it restores the multi-layered identity of Jeong Mun-bu and broadens the research horizons for understanding the characteristics of 17th-century painting poetry literature.
