백파긍선의 선사상에 비추어 본 『단경』의 36대법 고찰

육조혜능의 36대법론은 대립하는 개념 쌍을 통해 유무(有無)의 양극단에 대한 집착을 여의고, 자성에 기반한 중도의 지혜를 구현하도록 이끄는 설법 체계이다. 백파긍선은 이 36대법론을 자신만의 독창적인 사상 체계인 3구론, 기용론, 진공묘유론을 적용하여 새롭게 해석하였다. 본 논문은 백파가 혜능의 36대법 가르침을 자신의 선사상 안에서 어떻게 수용하고 재구성했는지 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 백파는 36대법의 운용 방식인 '양변 차단'과 '출몰(出沒)'을 방편의 영역인 '신훈3구', 즉 묘유(妙有)나 기용(機用)에 대응시켰음이 확인되었다. 동시에 대법 운용의 근원이자 귀결점인 '자성'을 깨달음의 본질인 '본분1구' 혹은 진공(眞空)과 계합시켰음을 구명하였다. 이러한 구조적 재해석을 통해 백파는 36대법론을 단순히 상대적 개념을 나열한 것이 아니라, 신훈(방편)과 본분(진여)이 통합된 최상승의 '제1구 조사선'으로 규정하였다. 본 연구는 그동안 별개로 논의되어 온 두 사상을 유기적으로 연결함으로써, 백파 선사상의 내적 정합성을 입증하고 그 계승과 심화의 창의적 과정을 밝혔다는 데 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Huineng's teaching of the "thirty-six pairs of opposites" is a doctrinal system designed to guide practitioners to detach from the extremes of existence and non-existence and to embody the wisdom of the Middle Way based on Self-nature. Baekpa Geungseon reinterpreted this doctrine through his unique theoretical framework, which includes the "Three Statements," "Qi-yong (Capacity and Function)," and "True Emptiness and Marvelous Existence." This study analyzed how Baekpa structurally integrated Huineng's teachings into his own Seon thought. The analysis revealed that Baekpa correlated the operational method of the thirty-six pairs—specifically the "blocking of both extremes" and their "appearance and disappearance"—with the expedient means of the "New Perfumed Three Statements" (also referred to as Marvelous Existence or Qi-yong). Furthermore, he connected the realization of "Self-nature," the ultimate source of these pairs, directly to the enlightened state of the "Original One Statement" (or True Emptiness). Through this reinterpretation, Baekpa defined the theory of the thirty-six pairs not merely as a list of opposites, but as the "First Statement Patriarchal Seon," which integrates expedient means with ultimate truth. By organically linking these two previously distinct concepts, this research verified the internal consistency of Baekpa's Seon thought and illuminated the creative process of its inheritance and deepening.
