18-19 세기 조선 천주교인들의 새벽기도(회)에 관한 연구

초록

실천신학회가 출판하는 「신학과 실천」내에는 기도에 대한 논문들이 거의 없고 새벽기도에 관한 논문도 하나 밖에 없다. 한국교회의 새벽기도(회)의 역사를 새롭게 더 깊숙이 연구할 필요가 있다. 한국교회의 새벽기도(회)가 20세기 초에 평양부흥회 때나, 1898년에 개신교에서 생겨났다고 하는 입장은 진부한 주장이다. 1890년대 초부터 조선 개신교인들이 새벽기도회로 모였던 증명들이 있고 백홍준이 만주에서 존 로스 (John Ross, 나약수, 나약한, 1842-1915) 선교사와 함께 신약성서를 번역한 후 의주로 돌아온 후에 새벽기도를 했을 가능성도 있다. 그리고 지금까지 발견된 조선 개신교의 최초 일곱 차례의 새벽기도(회)들 중에 한석진이나 새뮤얼 오스틴 모펫 (Samuel Austin Moffett, 마포삼열, 1864-1939) 선교사가 4번씩 참여했거나 영향을 주었을 가능성이 있고 백홍준이 만주 개신교나 천주교의 영향으로 새벽기도를 시작했을 가능성도 있기 때문에 조선 개신교인들이 새벽기도(회)를 자발적으로 시작했다는 주장도 재검토되어야 한다. 조선 개신교인들이 새벽기도(회)를 자발적으로 시작했는지 선교사들의 제안이나 모범에 따라 시작했는지 그리고 토착 종교적 전통이 교회에서도 수용된 것인지 아니면 교회의 시도(時禱) 전통에 따라 조과 (早課, Laudes) 같은 기도나 개신교회의 새벽기도(회) 전통이 수용된 것으로 이해해야 하는지 불분명하다.

Abstract

The author shows that early morning prayers in the Korean Church were not invented by Protestants but existed in the Korean Catholic Church already in the first half of the 19th century. These Catholic early morning prayers may have been started as early as in the end of the 18th century. Korean Catholics held private early morning prayers, while missionaries from France held sacramental early morning worship services and masses. Whether Korean Catholics held their early morning prayers only individually or also together with others is unclear. The early morning prayers by early Catholics have been held at different times of the day and with various purposes. Even though Catholic Koreans held Early Morning Prayers in a time of persecution, the early time of the day doesn't seem to have been motivated by an effort to hide, with the exception of the French missionaries' sacramental early morning services. This is also proven by the fact that early morning prayers existed at least until 1911 within the Korean Catholic Church, long after the persecution had ended.
