이세종선생의 영성형성을 위한 성서묵상 훈련 고찰

본 논문의 목적은 영적 스승 없이 탁월한 영성적 삶을 살았던 이공(李空) 이세종 선생(1877-1942)의 영성훈련 가운데 성서묵상훈련을 분석하고 그 훈련의 한국교회적 의의를 규명하는 것이다. 이세종은 기도생활, 창조물 묵상, 그리고 성서 묵상을 통해 자신의 영성을 형성하였는데 그가 살았던 전남 화순 지역에서 성인으로 추앙되는 인물이다. 안타깝게도 그의 기도생활과 창조물 묵상에 대한 자료는 거의 존재하지 않는다. 다행히 그의 성서 묵상에 대한 자료는 그의 제자들이 그의 설교와 가르침을 기록하여 출판하였다. 본 논문은 그의 제자들이 기록한 자료를 분석하여 그가 성서묵상을 통해 어떤 영감을 받았으며 그것이 오늘의 한국교회를 위해 어떤 의미가 있는지를 규명하고자 하였다. 분석을 통하여 이세종은 성서묵상을 통하여 ‘죄로부터의 정화,’ ‘영성지도,’ ‘고난의 삶,’ ‘육체의 소욕 부정,’ ‘성적인 금욕,’ ‘마음에 넘치는 하나님의 생명 경험,’ 그리고 ‘기도의 삶’등 전통적인 영성적 주제들과 밀접한 영성을 형성했음을 제시하였다. 그런데 이세종이 영적 지도자 없이 홀로 영성훈련을 했음에도 전통적인 영성가들과 유사한 영성의 열매를 맺은 이유는 그가 성서라는 기독교 영성형성의 ‘공통의 자료’ (the common source for the spiritual formation)’를 통해 영성훈련을 했기 때문이라고 판단된다. 이세종은 성서를 가능하면 문자적으로 해석하고 묵상했으며 영감 받은 교훈을 실천하려고 몸부림쳤다. 한국교회는 세계적인 대형교회를 이룬 목회자들도 배출되었고 서구의 명문대학에서 수학한 신학자들도 다수지만 사회적으로 신뢰를 잃어 가고 있다. 그 이유는 성서에 대한 지식 습득과 가르침을 넘어 삶으로 실천하는 영성가들이 적게 배출되었기 때문이다. 이런 현실에서 ‘파라 파라 깊이 파라. 얕이 파면 너 죽는다.’고 가르치며 성서묵상을 실천해 성화와 이타적 삶, 그리고 창조물에 대한 사랑을 보여 주었던 이세종의 영성훈련은 위기의 한국교회를 위한 하나의 나침반이 된다고 사료된다.
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the spiritual discipline of Sejong Lee (1877-1942), who lived an excellent spiritual life despite having never received any spiritual direction from others. This study also suggests some insights for the Korean church. Lee disciplined himself spiritually mainly through prayer, creation meditation, and biblical meditation. As a result, he has been praised as a saint in his hometown, Hwasoon in Junnam. Unfortunately, very little has been documented about his prayer life and meditation. Only some records about his sermons and teachings exist, since his disciples recorded and published them. Thus, I examine only his biblical meditation, which he was inspired by themes like the purification of sins, spiritual direction, a life of suffering, the denial of bodily desires and the sexual abstinence, the inner life of God, and prayer life. These were common themes and focuses in the lives of spiritual experts of the Western Christian world. I believe that the reason he shares many similarities in his spiritual inspiration with the spiritual experts of the Western world is that they both used the Bible as “the common source.” Lee interpreted the Bible literally and tried to live according to what he was inspired through the Bible. In the Korean church, there are many pastors who lead internationally well-known megachurches and many theologians who were trained at first rate seminaries. Yet, the Korean church has lost its influence on society since the last few decades. One of the reasons is that there are not many spiritual experts like Lee in the Korean church. It is time to pay attention to the life of Lee, who displayed personal sanctification, a love for others, and a love for the creatures through the fruits of his spiritual discipline. His saying, “You should meditate the Bible deeply, otherwise you would be dead spiritually,” is worthy of note if the Korean church still emphasizes only the learning and teaching of the Bible without obedience to its lessons.
