Abstract
The history of Christianity in India began in the middle of the first century by Thomas, the apostle. However, church and baptism have been problematic issues among non-Christians and even among Indian Christian theologians. The reason is that the Catholic mission of Portugueses, who began to occupy the southern part of India in the early sixteenth century, oppressed Hinduism and forcefully tried to proselytize people to Christianity. Protestant mission also emphasized proselytism focused mission. This experience made Indians recognize Christianity as "dangerous Other." For them, Christianity is simply a western foreign religion. This recognition also became a foundation of Indian Theology. For example, Kalagora Subba Rao expresses "madness of baptism," criticizing that Christian leaders made Christianity a religion that people can follow only through ceremonies like baptism. Not only this, but Indian theologians criticize foreignness, antisociality, anti-Hindu culture, and exclusivism of Christianity, and claim "Hindu Christianity" or "Christ-centred secular fellowship outside the church." Regarding India's mission, the researcher firstly claims that the Indian church needs to listen carefully to the criticism of Indian theologians. Secondly, the Indian church needs to solve inequality, human right, reconciliation, and social justice, preferentially within churches. Thirdly, with the love and service of Christ, the Indian church needs to have an attitude to respect and care for people of other religions. Lastly, the Indian church needs to dialogue and cooperate with Jesus bhaktas outside church for mission in India.
