고대교회 세례식 순서와 예전신학 : 4세기 암브로시우스의 밀라노 교회를 중심으로

초록

기원후 4세기는 로마제국 역사상 기독교 공인(313년)과 국교화(380년)로 기독교의 위상이 현저히 높아졌던 시대였다. 높아진 위상 가운데 기독교는 내외적으로 변화의 과정을 밝았다. 당시 많은 사람들이 교회의 일원으로 입교하고자 하였고, 이에 교회는 새로운 입교자를 위한 예식과 그들을 관리하기 위한 방법을 모색해 나갔다. 이러한 변화의 흐름 가운데 4-5세기는 기독교 예전 역사상 많은 발전을 이루었다. 최근 한국기독교학계에서는 이 시기에 놓여 있는 고대교회 세례식에 관한 논문들이 발표되었다. 하지만, 동방교회 세례에 관한 논문만이 발표되고 있는 현실을 감안할 때, 고대교회 전체적인 조망을 위해서는 고대 서방교회 세례식에 대한 논문의 필요성이 요청되고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 논문은 이러한 요청을 모티브로 삼고, 로마교회 외에 고대 서방교회를 대표하는 밀라노 교회 예식을 고찰해서 고대교회 세례식에 대한 균형 잡힌 시각을 갖추도록 하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 암브로시우스의 저서 『신비론』과 『예식론』을 중심으로 밀라노 교회의 세례를 상세히 분석했다. 이 두 저서에는 세례후 일주일 동안 새 입교자들에게 교육한 설교들이 담겨져 있고, 이 설교들은 ‘세례후 교육’으로 4세기에 있었던 특별한 교리문답이었는데, 본 논문은 두 저서에 담겨져 있는 세례식에 대한 언급과 그것의 신학적 해석을 서로 비교 분석하면서 밀라노 교회의 세례식을 밝혔다. 본 논문을 통해 필자는 다음의 사항들을 다루었다: 두 저서 『신비론』과 『예식론』에 대한 설명, 세례일과 시간과 장소, 세례준비의 2단계(세례준비인 단계와 세례자격인 단계), 총 12순서로 진행된 세례식, 그 순서마다 나타나는 성경적 근거와 그에 대한 암브로시우스의 해석과 신학적 입장이다. 본 논문의 마지막 단락은 4세기 밀라노 교회 세례식을 바탕으로 한국교회 세례식을 위한 교훈을 찾아내고자 했다.

Abstract

The 4th century AD was a time when Christianity was officially recognized(313) and became the official religion of the country(380), and the status of Christianity in the history of the Roman Empire remarkably increased. In this elevated state, Christianity is in the midst of change both internally and externally. At that time, many people wanted to enter the church as a member of the church, and in the church, ceremonies suitable for the new environment and a system suitable for the newly member were created. In the midst of these changes, many developments in the history of Christian ceremonies were made in the 4th and 5th centuries. Recently, thesis introducing the baptism ceremony of ancient churches in the 4th and 5th centuries has been published in the Korean academic world. However, it is difficult to see the overall appearance of baptism in ancient churches only with thesis on baptism in Eastern churches. Therefore, the necessity of a thesis on the baptismal ceremony of the ancient Western church was sensed, and this became the motive of this paper. More specifically, the purpose of this thesis is to consider the ceremonies of the Milan church, which represents the ancient Western church in addition to the Roman church, to contribute to a balanced view of the baptism of the ancient church. In order to accomplish this, Ambrosius' books 『De scramentis』 and 『De mysteriis』 mentioned on baptism were focused on. These two books contain sermons that were educated to new initiated for one week after baptism, and these sermons were “post-baptism catechism” in the 4th century. This paper revealed the following matters by comparing and analyzing the statements of baptism contained in the two books and their theological interpretations: 1) Explanation of two books, 2) Baptism day, time and place, 3) two-step process of baptism preparation(Baptism preparation stage and baptism qualification stage), 4) A total of 12 baptismal orders, 5) Biblical grounds appearing in each order, and Ambrosius' interpretation and theology of it. The final unit of this paper attempted to find a lesson for the baptismal ceremony of the Korean church by examining the baptismal ceremony of the Milan church, which was an ancient church in the 4th century.
