기술의 발달로 인해 우리가 사는 세상에서 가상현실이란 단어는 더 이상 낯선 것이 아니라 생활의 일부가 되고 있다. 최근 메타버스라는 신 개념이 등장하였고 차세대 유력한 사업으로 주목받고 있다. 메타버스는 인류가 살고 있는 현실 세계가 아닌 특별한 목적을 가지고 창조해낸 가상의 세계이다. 이러한 상황 속에서 일부 기독교 공동체도 온라인 예배를 표준 예배로 삼고 온라인 내의 메타버스 기독교 공동체를 구현해보겠다는 움직임도 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 기독교 메타버스 공동체와 예배에 관하여 다루고 있다. 이 연구를 진행하면서 필자가 도달한 결론은 다음과 같다. 기독교 공동체는 예수 그리스도의 성육신 사건에서 출발한 성례전적 자기 주심의 행위에서 시작되었고 이 공동체는 공동체원의 실제적 실천을 통해 실현되었다. 따라서, 가상 세계만을 추구하는 극단적 메타버스 기독교 공동체는 ‘디지털 가현설(digital docetism)’에 빠질 수 있다. 따라서, 기독교 메타버스 공동체의 도입은 그 신학적 제한성을 인정하고 그 영역 안에서 사용되어야 할 것이다. 이 연구는 다음과 같은 과정으로 진행되었다. 2장에서는 메타버스 세계의 등장과 코로나 19의 영향으로 인한 도전에 대해 논하였다. 3장에서는 기독교 메타버스 교회의 공동체성과 이에 대한 신학적 고찰을 하면서 이를 통해 얻을 것과 잃어버릴 것을 기술하였다. 4장에서는 기독교 메타버스 공동체와 예배와의 상관성을 연구하면서 메타버스 플랫폼을 이용한 예배에 대한 신학적 평가를 내렸다. 마지막 5장은 전체적인 요약과 함께 필자의 결론을 피력하였다.
Abstract
As the development of technology, the term, “virtual reality” is no longer a strange thing in the contemporary world, but is becoming a part of daily life. Recently, a new concept called the metaverse has emerged, and it is regarded as a promising future business. The metaverse is not the real world in which human beings exist, but it is a virtual world created with a special purpose. In this situation, some Christian communities are making moves to implement an online metaverse Christian community, performing digital worship as this virtual community’s standard worship service. This research deals with the Christian metaverse community and its worship. During this research, I reached at some conclusions as follows. The Christian community began with the act of sacramental self-giving, originated from the incarnation of Jesus Christ, and this community was realized through the practical practice of community members. Therefore, the extreme metaverse Christian community that pursues only the virtual world might fall into ‘digital docetism.’ Therefore, the introduction of the metaverse concept in the Christian community should acknowledge its theological limitations and the it should be used within the limited area. This paper proceeded as follows. In Chapter 2, I discussed the emergence of the metaverse world and the challenges posed by the impact of COVID-19. In Chapter 3, I dealt the communal nature of the metaverse church focusing on its theological considerations and both its strength and weakness. In Chapter 4, I made a theological evaluation regarding the worship on the metaverse platform, while studying the relationship between the Christian metaverse community and its worship. In last chapter 5, I presented my own conclusions regarding this subject with an overall summary.
