Abstract
This paper is a study on the direction of adult Christian education during a time when modern society is transforming into a learning society - one in which people need to learn to change and adapt - and also in which lifelong education is open to everyone for continuous development. The introduction first establishes the age range of adulthood. It then speaks to the use of terminology such as family education and family ministry. In particular, this paper points out that due to the nature of family ministry as a crisis program, too much emphasis is put on psychology without Biblical confirmation. Furthermore, this paper elaborates on the appropriateness of this study and categorizes adulthood into young adult, mid-adult, and mature adult. The main body first examines 'the history of adult Christian education' with the ‘early Hebrew education era', 'early Church era' and 'Reformation era' as the three major periods of adult education. The modern era is designated as the fourth era and is a critical time for adult Christian education to blossom. Secondly, the paper examines the need for adult Christian education in the new adult world. As the adult population continues to increase in the new world and as knowledge becomes more important than capital, labor or land in today's knowledge-based society, the church will need to place greater emphasis on adult education in the future. Thirdly, when examining the reality of adult Christian education, it was surprisingly discovered that an Adult Christian Education Curriculum does not exist in the majority of churches. Moreover, most churches separate education from ministry with adult education based mostly on popular programs without a formal adult Christian education curriculum and family ministry likewise operated based on the growth of the church in the absence of Biblical confirmation. Despite the many programs offered, family ministry programs are virtually non-existent in adult education programs. It is undesirable that the church separate education and ministry programs for adults. Fourthly, with regard to 'the prospects and direction of adult Christian education', the paper sees the church continuing to face negative criticism from Korean society and the harsh reality that a greater number of adult believers will turn their backs on the church. However, giving up on adult education when the adult population continues to grow is tantamount to accepting that the Korean church has no future. Effective education for adults is critical to adults leading Christian lives and service and to reveal their Christian identities as the light and salt of the earth. The church, through individual or inter-denominational efforts, must develop an Adult Education Curriculum to teach adults in the church. In conclusion, adult education in the Korean church is faced with both disappointing and challenging prospects, but by developing an Adult Christian Education Curriculum this research proposes that the church can teach adults how to lead Christian lives and service.
