Abstract
This study aims to explain the relationship between trauma and somatic experiencing and then to suggest the meaning of pastoral praxis. Especially it is discussed that understanding physical reactions in trauma situations is important in trauma situations and healing. In trauma healing, it is argued that if we deal with anger, guilt and sadness right away without first paying attention to the physical response, then emotional memories may be strengthened and recurrence of trauma may occur. It can, of course, be effective to consider a variety of approaches, from trauma healing to psychological relationships, family systems and socio-cultural ones. However, these techniques may actually strengthen trauma symptoms by activating a state of high arousal, so it is important to pay attention to the body's reactions first. This study reveals that the human body and mind are in an organic relationship, and that the mind can affect the body and the body can affect the mind, but trauma has the characteristic of starting in the body and following in the mind. Importantly, it explains that traumatic memories have an implicit rather than explicit nature, and that traumatic memories remain in the body and brain as fragments of sensations, emotions, and behaviors. In particular, it is revealed that phenomena such as body tremors, immobility, paralysis, and helplessness, which are physical reactions that occur when faced with a threat or traumatic situation, are also proven in the Bible. It reveals that the core trauma responses seen in traumatized people: hyperarousal, withdrawal, dissociation, helplessness, and immobility, are all normal responses to a threat. So when these trauma reactions become chronic, they create intense anxiety and cause a lot of pain, but it is emphasized that these reactions are signals of vitality to protect the person in trauma. The physical reactions of a person in trauma reveal an innate capacity for self-regulation, which is a gift that the body emits for self-protection. Importantly, it is discussed that these physical responses in people experiencing trauma have not only psychological but also theological characteristics. Because the body, made in the image of God, was created to be activated in situations of extreme danger. Therefore, it suggests that developing the capacity to face uncomfortable physical sensations and feelings emanating from the body without being overwhelmed has important significance not only in life formation but also in pastoral praxis.
