오늘날 예배 갱신에서 음악의 위치와 역할에 대한 유형들 고찰

Reflection on the Paradigms of Music in the Contemporary Worship Renewal

초록

오늘날 예배 갱신에서 음악은 예배 구조와 예배자들의 참여 방식을 결정하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 글은 오늘날 예배 갱신에서 음악의 위치와 역할에 대한 유형들을 고찰한다. 우리 시대 예배 갱신에서 음악은 크게 세 가지 유형으로 나타난다. 첫 번째는 예배자들의 문화를 수용하는 음악 유형이다. 이 유형은 음악을 예배자들과 연결하고 그들의 문화를 수용하기 위한 방식으로 사용된다. 예배자들이 선호하는 음악을 예배 안으로 수용하고 교회의 성장을 위한 대안으로 활용하기도 한다. 두 번째는 음악을 통한 성례적 경험을 강화하는 유형이다. 이 유형은 예배자들이 음악을 통해 그리스도와의 직접적이고 친밀한 만남을 경험하게 하는 것을 강조한다. 세 번째는 음악을 통한 삶의 변화를 이끌어내는 유형이다. 이 유형은 예배 음악이 예배자들의 정체성과 관계를 형성하고 상상력을 제공하는 방식으로 삶을 형성하는 것을 강조한다. 이러한 세 가지 예배 음악의 유형들은 오늘날 예배에 다양하고 복잡한 방식으로 영향을 미치며 발전하고 있다. 오늘날 예배 갱신에서 음악과 관련한 과제는 이 세 가지 유형 가운데 어느 하나를 택하기보다는 한 예배 공동체에서 신학적 고찰과 목회적 분별력을 갖고 지혜롭게 통합 및 수용하는 것이 좀 더 바람직하다. 이를 위해서 예배가 음악을 통해 특정한 예배자들을 향한 적실성을 추구하기보다 서로 다른 문화를 포용적으로 수용하기 위한 노력이 요구된다. 아울러, 음악을 통한 하나님의 임재 경험을 감정적 영역으로 제한하지 않고 삼위 하나님에 대한 전인적 참여가 되도록 노력하는 것이 바람직하다. 또한 예배 음악이 예배자들의 변화를 기능적으로 이끌어내는 것이 아니라 창조와 구속의 완성을 담아내고 삶의 전 영역을 포괄적으로 제시하는 성경의 내러티브를 더욱 강화하면 도움이 될 수 있다. 음악은 말씀과 성찬과 함께 현대 예배자들의 예배 참여 방식과 신앙형성에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이와 관련해서 예배 갱신은 다양한 방식으로 주어지는 음악의 위치와 역할을 신학적으로 고찰하고 예배자들의 적극적이고 전인적인 참여를 제시하기 위한 목회적 노력을 지속적으로 요구한다.

Abstract

Music has significant functions in shaping the structure of worship and leading the congregations to participate in the service of contemporary worship. This article attempts to reflect the places and roles of music in the contemporary worship renewal movement. There are three most distinctive paradigms of music in the contemporary worship. The first paradigm is the one that attempts to sync with worshipers and reveal the values of their cultures in the practice of worship. This paradigm has been actively accepted by the church growth movement. The second paradigm is the one that emphasizes the sacramental function of music in worship. As a central figure of praise and worship movement, this paradigm promotes the intimate participation in the presence of Christ through music. The third paradigm is the one that articulates the formative role of music. This paradigm accentuates the shaping of identity, relationship, and imagination through music for the contemporary worshipers. Contemporary music artists and theologians tend to take this paradigm as a hermeneutical frame of interpreting and directing music in worship. These three main paradigms of music have their own origins and developments by influencing each other in complicate ways. A most desirable and practical way of connecting between these paradigms and the practices of contemporary worship would be not so much of choosing one of them as of integrating them into a service with pastoral and discerning spirits. Based on pastoral and theological reflection, this article suggests a direction of music in worship: accepting the inclusiveness of music from different cultures and generations, promoting holistic participation of worshipers in the presence of Christ not by limiting only emotional experience as musical participation, and alerting the functional approach to form the faith and life of worshipers through music.
