Abstract

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, handed down the Book of Worship for American Methodists in 1784. Wesley formed this worship book based on his theological backgrounds, the perspective of the Church of England and the Reformed Puritan on Christian worship. Wesley organized his structural form of liturgy based on that of Anglican liturgy, while in terms of content, he included many parts of the atmosphere of pious and simpleness influenced from Puritan tradition. In addition, Wesley's interest in early Christian worship served as an opportunity for him to use materials from the early church for this worship. Wesley’s Sunday service, however, was not welcomed in American context. The churches, mostly located in the frontiers, were not ready for performing the liturgy consisted of the fixed prayers, and moreover, the pastors did not prefer this form of worship. Particularly, from the end of the 18th century, camp meeting rapidly became popular within the Methodist tradition, which was one of the main reasons why the American Methodist Church distanced itself from John Wesley's worship. The Book of Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1792 excludes many parts of Wesley's worship or appears in a reduced form. Wesley's worship subsequently moved away from the Methodist tradition during the 19th century. In the 20th century, however, Wesley's worship was re-examined in the American Methodist tradition. In the 20th century, the movement to return to the liturgy of the early church, such as the liturgical movement, was popular in Europe, England, and North America. Methodist traditions, then, turned their eyes to Wesley's liturgy, which was their theological root. The Second Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church further accelerated this movement. Due to these movements, the Methodist traditions in the United states restored Wesley's worship for the first time in 1932, and included it in the first worship book published in 1945. Even after that, Wesley's worship continued to be the foundation of Methodist liturgical theology and was used as the most important material in shaping the United Methodist Book of Worship in 1992. It is not easy to use Wesley's worship in 1784 itself into today’s worship, but accepting the theological meanings and considerations that Wesley pursued and integrating it to adjust the contexts of the 21st century would be necessary..
