Abstract
This study starts with the basic assumption that Donna Haraway's cyborg feminism shares its methodology and goals with those of postcolonial feminism. As an example, Haraway appropriates Trinh T Minh-ha's concept of "inappropriate/d others" in her elaboration of cyborg imagery and its epistemology of difference. The concept of cyborg, however, is more inclusive and radical than the ideology of postcolonial feminists in general such as Minha's concept of inappropriate/d others or Spivak's idea of "subaltern" or "native informant" in the fact that it goes beyond the boundary of human definition. In a word, cyborg is a signifier and a metaphor for the breakdown of the boundary between organism and machine, man and animal. Haraway contends that the image of contamination and danger of cyborg should be the identity of women in the postmodern world of technology. The second section of this study pursues the similarity between Haraway's cyborg concept with the symbolic anthropologist, Mary Douglas's Purity and Danger, specifically focusing on her ideas of contamination and danger. The third section focuses on the meaning of cyborg and companion species subject in Haraway's Companion Species Manifesto published in 2003. In this book, the cultural concept of cyborg merges with the natural concept of companion species in a word of "natureculture." The fourth section introduces and explains the matter of representation of the inappropriate others in terms of wave diffraction and the feminist science fiction. Finally, last section analyzes Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series from the epistemology of Haraway's cyborg feminism. Butler represents Haraway's 'inappropriate others' through her various forms of characters such as aliens and hybrids and thus reminds us of the potential of partial and flexible cyborg subject in Haraway's cyborg feminism.
