초록

Although generics have been considered as one of the hot debating issues in the semantics and induces dynamic research on the diverse aspects of generics, the morphological issues of generics do not attract much attention of semanticists. In this study, I have surveyed the general properties of characterizing and normative generics. And then, I have critically reviewed Cohen (2001), a major study on the different semantics of the two types of generics, pointing out that Cohens analysis does not reflect the morphological differences and that it is also based on an ad-hoc mechanism. To provide a better account, I have argued that characterizing generics show close similarities to groups in many aspects while normative generic readings are restricted to ideal individuals. I have also proposed that charactering generics involve quantification over groups while normative generics take only ideal possible worlds for relevant quantificational domain. With these slight changes of the semantics, the similarities and differences of characterizing and normative generics are uniformly captured; moreover, the morphological number of generics is well reflected to their semantics.
