초록
This paper primarily accounts for why IS generics cannot have the DG reading. The essence of the proposal is that the exceptions of the IS generics are to be explained by the group individual but the DG reading has the only option of the cover variable to accommodate exceptions. This clash results in the infelicity of the IS generic in the DG reading. Supporting evidence for Korean generics was found since Korean IS generics have the form of the bare-formed plural which is defined as a group individual. Yet, a difference between Korean generics and English generics is observed: Korean IS generics sometimes allow for the DG reading while English IS generics cannot. This paper argues that the difference comes from the fact that the Korean indefinite singular is an inherent group individual as a type of a plural term while the English indefinite singular is a forced group individual as basically a singular term. The inherent group can easily be shifted to the sum reading under special circumstances while the enforced group cannot.
