Abstract

Louise Erdrich uses two narrators in her novel Tracks. One is an old, full-blooded man, Nanapush whose name is the trickster's traditional name for the Chippewa tribe. The other is a fifteen year old mixed-blood, Pauline Puyat who becomes a Catholic nun at the end of the novel. Critics who view Nanapush as the trickster tend to consider Erdrich's authorial intention to preserve Native American indigenous culture. On the other hand, if we define Pauline as a trickster, an unreliable narrator for her immoral lies, we may have a different interpretation. Erdrich's goal of writing Tracks appears to be to cure the trauma caused by ethnic boundaries and to pursue trans-ethnic harmony. As a trickster discourse, Pauline's story amplifies misconceptions of Native American ethnicity to the extent of comic absurdity. Too ridiculously far-fetched to be taken seriously, the misconceptions become deconstructed. Through the humorous deconstruction, the trickster Pauline liberates herself and the reader from traumas.
