Abstract

The diary gives the impression of grabbing hold of everything the diarist encounters. It seems to promise that whatever topic interests the researcher. In remarking on Yu Man-ju's enthusiasm for everyday life and all the books of the world, some researchers obscures a point more historically significant and textually demonstrable than the abstract attribute of enthusiasm. The aim of this paper is to explore the time of Heumyeong as a diary. At first, I remark the external affinity between the almanac and the diary. In eighteenth-century Choseon, new conceptions of time took shape as a result of the popularization of the almanac. Time in the almanac is steady and continuous rather than intermittent and has calendrical grid. This has had a strong influence on a diurnal form by giving a template for textualizing time and self. The day's narrative is plotted on a continuous, calendrical grid. In Heumyeong, the dated entry is the fundamental unit enclosure. The calendrical contiguity of the entries encloses each and enacts that calibrated continuity. In the pages of his private narrative, Yu Man-ju constructs autonomy. He can observe and record himself in a time-ordered way. Heumyeong inscribes a private account of the new time, more assiduously, and more attentively than does any of its contemporaries. Yu Man-ju draws on antecedents in his culture but works changes on them. I argue that what Yu man-ju did with time and text is central to his achievement as a diarist.
