이 논문은 영어권 학회지에 논문을 쓰거나 출판을 계획하고 있는 독자를 대상으로 북미 대학에서 한국 고전문학이 가르치고 연구되는 양상을 개괄하는 기초 작업이다. 북미에서 보이는 한국문화에 대한 관심에도 불구하고 한국문학, 특히 고전문학 분야는 널리 알려지지 않았고 매우 소수의 연구자와 저서에 의존하는 상황을 고려해 볼 때, 국내 학자들의 적극적 참여가 요구된다. 본 논문은 북미 대학 수업에서 널리 쓰이는 한국 고전문학 번역서와 연구서의 소개, 영어권 독자들을 위한 상세한 주석 및 문화 설명의 필요성, 로마자 표기와 고유명사의 표기, 한국학의 영어 용어 사용을 다룬다. 북미에서 한국 고전 문학의 접근을 위해서는 첫째, 독자는 영어 모국어 사용자이며, 둘째, 독자가 한국 언어나 문화에 대한 지식이 없다고 전제하고, 셋째, 한국 고전 문학을 배우는 이유가 전공필수가 아닌 흥미나 실용에 있다는 점을 고려할 필요가 있다. 그리고 한국 고전 문학이 한국의 사회와 역사를 바라볼 수 있는 분야가 되기 위해서는 해외 연구자들과 협업하는 것이 필요하다.
Abstract
The field of premodern Korean literature remains underdeveloped in the States, as most scholars and students choose twentieth-century literature. Literature in literary Chinese is, however, one of two pillars, with one in the vernacular, to understand premodern Korean literature in a diglossic tradition. In light of these circumstances, this study introduces pre-modern Korean literature studies at U.S. universities for Korean scholars in Korea who plan to research, teach, or publish books on pre-modern Korean literature-related topics in the States. This study examines widely used textbooks and researches, their contents, issues in the selection of research and translation subjects, English terms in Korean studies, Romanization systems of Korean, and international conferences and academic magazines that enable cooperation among Korean scholars inside and outside Korea.
