Abstract

This study examines Kim Ch'anghyŏp’s Sŏmjeokp’yŏn (審敵篇) in order to analyze the responses and positions of Kim Ch'anghyŏp and the Andong Kim clan regarding Wu Sangui’s rebellion. Through this analysis, the paper seeks to illuminate the Andong Kim clan’s perception of domestic and foreign affairs in the seventeenth century. The first person to receive news of Wu Sangui’s uprising was Kim Chang-hyŏp’s father, Kim Suhang(金壽恒), and this information reached the Chosŏn court on March 2, 1674. In response to the news, public opinion within Chosŏn was largely divided into three camps: the first advocated for a bukbeollon (北伐論)—a Northern Expedition to join forces with Wu’s army to restore the Ming dynasty; the second emphasized a hyeonsillon (現實論)—a pragmatic view that prioritized internal reform, relief of the people, and strengthening of national power; and the third took a gwanmangnon (觀望論)—a wait-and-see approach, observing the evolving situation without immediate action. It was within this complex historical context that Kim Chang-hyŏp composed the Sŏmjeokp’yŏn. Although prompted by Wu Sangui’s rebellion, the Sŏmjeokp’yŏn does not limit itself to an evaluation of that event. Rather, the central focus of the text lies in two interrelated arguments: the inevitable self-destruction (自滅) of the Qing dynasty and the imperative of Chosŏn’s self-strengthening (自强). The former reflects a widely held belief among contemporary Chosŏn literati that the Qing dynasty’s collapse was inevitable, underpinned by a strong commitment to taemyeong uiri (對明義理)—the moral duty to uphold the legitimacy of the Ming dynasty. The latter reveals Kim Chang-hyŏp’s practical statecraft, which prioritized the stabilization of domestic governance and the enhancement of national strength. For Kim, self-strengthening was a necessary precondition to repel external threats and ultimately restore the Ming-centered world order. Kim’s rejection of bukbeollon was thus not a repudiation of taemyeong uiri, but rather a realistic strategy. He believed that only after Chosŏn had achieved internal stability and sufficient strength could it consider a military expedition to overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming. This position may be characterized as Kim Ch'anghyŏp’s “self-strengthening theory of loyalism” (自强的 對明義理論). Moreover, the political consciousness articulated in the Sŏmjeokp’yŏn closely aligns with the views of other prominent members of the Andong Kim clan—namely Kim Sanghŏn(金尙憲), Kim Suhŭng (金壽興), and Kim Suhang. In this respect, the Sŏmjeokp’yŏn should not be viewed merely as an expression of Kim Ch'anghyŏp’s personal thought, but as a representative text that encapsulates the broader ideological orientation and foreign policy perception of the Andong Kim lineage in the late seventeenth century. In the late Chosŏn period, the Sŏmjeokp’yŏn continued to exert considerable influence among the Noron literati. However, over time, Kim Ch'anghyŏp’s original emphasis on self-strengthening as a prerequisite for loyalist action gradually faded. Instead, the text was increasingly appropriated to support a rigid a dogmatic stance of exalting the Ming and rejecting the Qing—detached from the practical realities of the time. In contrast, Pak Chiwŏn(朴趾源) critically inherited Kim Ch'anghyŏp’s thought and, through his Sŏmsep’yŏn (審勢編), re-examined the dominant discourse of sungmyeong baecheong (崇明排淸) from a pragmatic perspective. Pak proposed a more open and progressive theory of loyalism, grounded in reality and adapted to the changing geopolitical order. Through this reinterpretation, he sought to overcome the limitations of ideological rigidity and reposition the discourse of taemyeong uiri within a more dynamic and responsive framework.
