19세기말~20세기 초반에 전성시대를 자랑했던 세계박람회는 첨단의 과학기술제품이 데뷔하는 흥업(興業)무대였고, 서구가 주도했던 근대화와 문명화 사명의 전진기지였으며, 만국공법과 물품분류체계 등과 같은 보편지식을 전파하고 배우는 계몽의 교육장이었다. 조선은 1882년에 미국과 수교한 것을 신호탄 삼아 서양 여러 나라들에게 문호를 개방했다. 1893년 미국 시카고에서 개최된 콜롬비아 박람회는 국제사회의 새내기 조선이 참석하는 첫 세계박람회였다. ‘은자 나라’라는 왜곡되고 부정적인 이미지를 벗고 조선이 세계만방에 독립국임을 선언하고 국제사회의 일원임을 과시했던 중요한 역사적 사건이었다. 1893년 시카고박람회 참가 100주년을 기념하여 개최된 1993년 대전세계박람회 이후 조선(한국)과 세계박람회의 관계를 추적하는 글들이 활발하게 출간되었다. 대부분의 선행연구들은 ‘국가’, ‘문명’, ‘국제화’, ‘근대화’, ‘민족주의’ 등과 같은 거대담론적인 키워드로 박람회를 해부하고 수렴함으로써 세계박람회에 참석한 개인들의 목소리를 간과․과소평가했던 약점이 있다. 문화적 전통과 역사적 배경이 각기 다른 나라에서 파견된 박람회 대표자들은 타자와 낯선 문명을 어떻게 이해․전유했을까? 세계박람회에서 획득한 지식과 경험은 특정 개인의 세계관을 변화시켰는가? ‘박람회에 관한 사적인 기억’이라는 미시적 차원에서 재조명한 세계박람회는 국가와 문명이라는 거시적 차원으로 서술된 기존의 역사와 어떻게 다른가? 고종이 출품사무대원으로 임명한 정경원((鄭敬源, 1851-1898)의 사례연구에 초점을 맞춰 이런 물음들에 대답해 보려는 것이 이 논문의 목표이다. 미국에 6개월간 체류했던 정경원은 자신이 직접 보고 경험했던 미국문명에 대한 감상과 비평을 일기와 여행기 등의 기록으로 남겼다. 그는 미국문명의 특징과 장단점을 어떻게 진단했으며, 미국 모델이 조선의 이상적인 미래라고 확신했는가? 미국의 과학기술적인 혜택에 대한 놀라움과 반대되는 물질주의의 천박성에 대한 경멸감, 미국의 민주주의․법치주의에 대한 존경심과 대비되는 여성해방과 남녀평등의 위험성에 대한 경계심, 소중화주의자로서의 도덕적 우월감과 어긋나는 독립국가로서의 동등한 자격 요구, 서양 열강에 능멸당한 늙은 호랑이 청나라에 대한 실망․환멸과 대조되는 근대화에 앞장선 메이지 일본에 대한 동경과 질투ㅡ두 문명이 충돌하는 ‘접촉지대(contact zone)’에서 생성된 그의 모순되고 갈등적인 세계관을 무조건 ‘동도서기론(東道西器論)’으로 환원시킬 수만은 없다. 19세기말 조선의 40대 엘리트 남성이 간직한 흑인, 미국여성, 미국원주민, 동아시아인 등에 대한 타자 인식은 ‘동양적 격물치지(格物致知)’와 ‘서양적 이용후생(利用厚生)’이라는 기계적인 대비의 담론으로는 번역될 수 없는 복잡한 성격을 갖기 때문이다. 지독히도 가부장적이고 은근히 인종주의적이며 당연하게도 계급적인 중층구조로 형성된 그의 정신세계와 감정구조를 우리는 조선식으로 문화 번역된 ‘경계사유(border thinking)’의 일종으로 재조명할 수도 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to understand how a neo-Confucian Korean officer perceived and experienced the dual facet of American civilization at the end of the 19th century. The protagonist of the story is Jeong Gyeong-won(鄭敬源, 1851-1898), the Royal Commissioner of Joseon(朝鮮), who participated at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. During his six months stay of official duty, he was in charge of managing Korea pavilion, attended many diplomatic receptions, audited President Cleveland of the USA, toured American cities, and hosted the farewell party on behalf of Korean monarch Gojong. After returning to Korea, Jeong promoted to vice-minister of Justice Department and to the Governor of Pyeongyang Provence. The Royal Commissioner Jeong kept diary and travelogue to record his itinerary and narrate how his own Confucian world-view conflicted and collided with American ways of modern civilization. Based on these primary sources―the sole eye-witnessing documents written (or rather “discovered” so far) about Joseon’s involvement with the World Expositions, I will raise questions as follows: why did a conservative Korean bureaucrat admire, despise, and was embarrassed by American political system, socioeconomic practices, and cultural norms? According to Jeong’s observation, what were the amazing merits and critical weakness of American/Western civilization? In retrospect, what had been historical influences and legacies of World Expositions for East Asian nations? Concluding part emphasizes the need of reappraising the nature of World Expositions, which have played important roles in modernization, nation-building, and civilizing process. And the author suggests the urgency of re-designing future World Expositions in order to overcome Euro/Western-centric perspectives and to encourage the mode of border thinking and cultural hybridity.
