Abstract
This study aims to analyze the uses and characteristics of five types of future time expressions in English, and to compare the meanings of will and be going to among others in context of utterance in which they occur. will is the most neutral expression for future time, be going to expresses future time arising from present time, present progressive expresses future time planned or arranged, simple present expresses future time as fact, and will + progressive expresses future time as matter of course. A sentence containing will is often felt to be more elliptical and generally co-occurs more easily with conditional clauses than a sentence with be going to. And be going to shows more certainty and definiteness, and refers to nearer future than will. In sum, will can be said to be future-oriented expressing speaker's volition, plan, and determination about future events, and be going to is speaker-oriented referring to future in the present.
