이 논문은 홍언의 미국 기행가사에 대해서 살핀 것이다. 홍언은 재미한인 작가이자 독립운동가이다. 그는 ≪신한민보≫의 화교위원으로 독립자금을 모금하기 위해 미국 서부를 돌아다니며 강연과 작품 창작을 하였다. 이때 지은 작품이 1935년 12월 12일부터 1937년 5월 20일까지 신문에 게재되었다. 본고에서는 이를 대상으로 형식과 내용적인 특성을 살핀 후에 이를 바탕으로 문학사적 가치를 검토하였다. 이를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 홍언은 약 2년에 걸쳐 ≪신한민보≫에 총 29편 34수의 작품을 발표하였다. 작품은 분연체이고, 율격을 엄격히 지키고 있다. 그리고 작품은 기행가사로만 이루어진 것이 아니라 대부분이 문과 시로 구성되어 있다. 장소에 대한 설명이나 여행과 관련된 것을 문으로 설명하고, 여행지에서 느끼는 감정은 시로 표현하고 있다. 둘째, 홍언은 조국의 상황과 자신의 처지로 인해 여행자로서의 여유를 즐기며 시를 짓기보다는 목적이 드러나는 작품을 창작하게 된다. 그는 조국에 대한 걱정과 그리움을 느끼며, 타지에서 힘들게 사는 이민자들의 어려움을 공감하고 있다. 하지만 현실을 부정적으로만 보지 않고 기대와 희망을 드러낸다. 이국적인 풍광을 접했을 때는 즉각적인 감탄이나 놀라움보다는 자연의 모습을 차분하게 묘사하며 서경시의 모습을 보이기도 한다. 셋째, 홍언은 재미한인 작가로서 시뿐만 아니라 소설, 희곡, 비평 등 다양한 장르를 창작하였다. 독립자금 마련이나 강연 등의 독립운동가로 적극적인 활동을 한 그의 작품을 통해서 초기 재미한인들의 의식을 엿볼 수 있다. 그렇기에 그가 창작한 400여 편의 작품이 더욱 활발하게 연구되어야 할 것이다. 그리고 그가 지은 기행가사는 작자, 여행 동기, 여행지를 비교할 때 여타의 기행가사와는 차별화되며 그 자체로 의의가 있겠다.
Abstract
Hong left San Francisco on September 2nd, 1935 and traveled around the west coast in order to collect funds for independence movement and because he was invited by the Chinese immigrants, and he published his works on the social commentary sectionof ≪Shinhanminbo≫. From December 12th of that year to May 20th, 1937, a total of 29 volumes and 34 pieces of work. Here, we focus on the pieces Hong wrote while traveling around America in order to collect funds for independence movement activities. First, Hong went to Hawaii in 1904 and worked on a farm, established Jaganghoe society representing the Korean population, and edited its monthly publication Jashinbo. After, as the society unified with the head society in mainland America. He focused on the independence movement activities for Korea creating his lyrical work, public speaking, and fund-raising. He wrote and published a total of 29 volumes and 34 pieces of lyrics from his American west coast from December 12th, 1935 to May 20th, 1937. These have stanzas and observe strict metrics, and are unique in that most of them are comprised of poetry and prose. Second, because Hong was traveling around America to do fund-raising activities, he doesn’t have much of personal memories to cherish. He feels the concerns and longing for Korea and empathizes with the immigrants living in a foreign land. However, he does not focus on the negative side but rather shows hope and positive anticipation. When he faces exotic sceneries, rather than expressing immediate awe or amazement, he mostly creates calm and quiet atmosphere. Third, Hong was a Korean-American write and published 400 pieces of work. He must be recognized as a notable part of the Korean literature and this would further make the field of Korean literature richer. And his travel lyrics expanded the range of modern travel lyrics. The fact that he did not travel the west for his personal leisure or purpose but rather as a journalist proposes a motivation that is different from that of traditional travel lyrics.
