초록

This study aims to investigate the relationship between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence in the acquisition of English modal auxiliaries. Sixty four college students participated in the study after being categorized into either a high-level English proficiency group or a low-level English proficiency group depending on a TOEIC score. A grammatical judgment test and a pragmatic judgment test for English modal auxiliaries were administered and the analyses of Pearson correlation, independent t-test and two-way ANOVA were performed. The results showed that there was a statistically significant mean difference between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence of two English proficiency groups in the use of English modal auxiliaries, but that there was not a statistically significant correlation between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence in the use of English modal auxiliaries. The discussion about research results and the direction of further research were presented
