초록

This study aims to examine whether phonological information is used during visual word recognition processes. While most of the previous studies suggested importance of the orthographic information, there have been debates on the role of the phonological information on visual word recognition. In this study, 44 university students participated in a cross modally primed lexical decision task with high and low frequency words. The effect of the auditory primes that matched with phonology(e.g./궁/) or orthography(e.g./국/) of the visual target words(e.g. 국민) were compared with unrelated control(e.g./언/). The results showed that both of the phonological and orthographic priming conditions facilitated lexical decision latencies for high frequency words while only orthographic priming had an effect for low frequency words. The results were discussed based on the bi-modal interactive activation model of the word recognition
