Abstract

This paper is a study on the Korean language ending system. It examined (i) whether the ending system actually exists in the Korean language, (ii) what are the characteristics and limitations of the Korean language ending system proposed in the current school grammar, (iii) if possible, what is an alternative system to the current Korean ending system were discussed. In this paper, we paid attention to the fact that in the Standard Korean Dictionary, there are more than 800 endings, which are grammatical morphemes that add grammatical contents such as tense, penmanship, respect, aspect, and mode to the stem of an verb. In particular, it was suggested that in order to explain the fact that there are more than 800 grammatical morphemes corresponding to endings and the reason why Korean speakers use a large number of endings without confusion, we have no choice but to acknowledge the fact that the ending system exists in Korean. Based on the suggestion that the ending system exists in the Korean language, the characteristics and limitations of the ending system proposed in the current school grammar were reviewed. In the ending system proposed in the current school grammar, it is set as a category called “ending”. It was confirmed that the upper ending category is classified into two lower ending categories to form a system. Despite these characteristics, the ending system proposed in the current school grammar (i) establishes intermediate ending categories (final endings, non-final endings, etc.) whose existence is difficult to confirm and (ii) shows the standard set is inconsistent when category of “ending” is classified as lower ending categories. In this paper, the following information was presented as an alternative to the ending system proposed in the current school grammar. First, the characteristics appeared in agglutinated words of pre-final endings and final endings were distinguished. Pre-final endings were not included in the ending system. Second, excluding “non-final endings” that fall into the middle ending category, it was explained that they are directly differentiated from final endings into “final endings”, “connective endings” and “transformative endings”, and it was mentioned that these are distributed complementary to each other. Third, final endings and connective endings show the characteristics of the finite verbs and the infinitive verbs, and these characteristics are (i) related to the co-occurrence with pre-final endings and (ii) understood as a difference in degree rather than an absolute characteristic. As a result, it was proposed that final endings, connective endings, and transformative endings form a continuum and form a ending system based on a single standard for setting that can occur with the pre-final endings (a characteristic to determine whether a ending is closed to the a finite verb or to a infinitve verb).
