A Base-Generation Analysis of the Focused Phrase in the kes Cleft Construction. It is well known that the kes cleft construction shows connectedness effects since the focused phrase in the pivot position behaves as if it is in a gap position of kes clause. A way of accounting for its connectedness effects would be to say that the focused phrase moves from the gap position to the pivot position. This paper argues that the connectedness effects don’t provide an argument for this kind of movement analysis, and claims that the focused element is base-generated in the pivot position.
Abstract
A Base-Generation Analysis of the Focused Phrase in the kes Cleft Construction.
