『고본춘향전』 개작의 몇 가지 문제

1913년 신문관에서 간행한 『고본춘향전』은 서울의 貰冊 <춘향전>을 底本으로 최남선이 개작한 것이다. 1930년대 춘향전 연구자들은 세책 <춘향전>에 대한 지식이 없었기 때문에 『고본춘향전』의 저본이 무엇인지 알 수 없었다. 이들은 완판84장본을 춘향전 이본 가운데 가장 오래된 것으로 보았고, 그 결과는 “근원설화→판소리→판소리계소설”의 도식으로 이어지게 되었다. 1970년대에 외국의 도서관에 소장된 세책 <춘향전>이 국내에 소개되면서 『고본춘향전』은 서울의 향목동에서 빌려주던 세책 <춘향전>을 저본으로 했다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 그리고 서울의 세책 <춘향전>은 판소리와는 아무 관련이 없다는 사실이 점점 알려지게 되었다. 이 논문에서는 『고본춘향전』과 관련된 몇 가지 문제를 간략하게 서술하고, 최남선이 어떻게 세책의 내용을 변개시켰나 하는 점을 보았다. 최남선이 『고본춘향전』의 저본이 세책이라는 사실을 말하지 않은 이유는 아마도 <춘향전>을 고전으로 만들고 싶었던 의도와 관련이 있을 것이다. 그러나 이러한 최남선의 의도는 그다지 성공적이라고 보이지 않는다.
Abstract
Gobon Chunhyangjeon was published from Shinmunguan in 1913. It was adapted by Choi Namseon which based on lending library version of Chunhyangjeon. Researchers of Chunhyangjeon in 1930's could not have known the base of Gobon Chunhyangjeon because they did not have knowledge on the lending library books. They thought Wanpan 84 leaves version was the oldest variant of Chunhyangjeon and as a result, the diagram of "Original tale⟶Pansori⟶Novel" has been established. From 1970's, the lending library versions of Chunhyangjeon owned by foreign libraries were introduced to Korea. Through this process, it became clear that Gobon Chunhyangjeon was based on the lending library version of Chunhyangjeon lent in Hyangmok-Dong, Seoul. Another result of the process was that lending library version of Chunhyangjeon had no relation to Pansori. This article dealt with some of the Gobon Chunhyangjeon's issues and examined how Choi Namseon modified the original lending library version. The reason why Choi Namseon did not mention the fact that the original text of Gobon Chunhyangjeon was the lending library version might be related to his intention of making Chunhyangjeon as an classic. However, his intention seems to be not a successful one.
