Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Korean middle school students’ personality types on language learning strategy use and English achievement level. One of the major current trends in language teaching is its shift of focus from teacher-oriented whole class approach to learner-centered approach. In this regard, learners’ individual factors are considered to play an important role in learning a language and personality is one of the factors that need to be discussed more in depth. The results of MBTI, SILL, and the first semester English scores of 207 subjects are collected and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation, T-test, and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results show that students’ strategy use was significantly different in Judging and Perception pair but not in other pairs. Achievement level was significantly different between Extroversion and Introversion, and Judging and Perception pairs. The relationship between learner’s strategy use and the achievement level was relatively high for cognition, compensation, and metacognition strategies.
