Abstract

The present study aims to identify university-level learners’ opinions on ELT (English language teaching) materials evaluation criteria. Data were collected through questionnaires from 1,133 students in 10 different ELT courses at four different universities in Seoul, Korea. The survey was conducted in 1997, 2001 and 2003 respectively. The results of the analysis showed that the average correlation coefficient for the criteria-items that asked for the opinions among the ten groups was .79. This indicates that there was a high level of agreement implying that there seems to be a consensus among Korean university-level ELT learners’ opinions. The criteria related to ‘quality of cassette tapes’, ‘interest’, ‘price’, ‘aims of learning English’, ‘cultural tone’, and ‘coverage of four skills and communicative strategies’ were ranked as highly important. To conclude, it is suggested that it would be beneficial for teachers to use collected opinions from learners before coursebook selection, adaptation and design. It may also make it possible to actualize the idea of learner-centered curriculum and potentially contribute to learners’ independent use of coursebooks after a course.
