초록
The study compared performance by native English speakers and Korean bilinguals in sentence reading tasks, using causative/inchoative alternating verbs. It tested the reaction times (RTs) in an on-line self-paced reading task and the scales in an off-line naturalness judgment task, and found significant difference in the former task but no significant difference in the latter one between native English speakers and Korean bilinguals. This means that the comprehension processing of English sentences was different between participant groups, although the final judgment of the naturalness of the sentences was similar. More specifically, the results showed that the Korean bilinguals with low English proficiency showed RT patterns reflecting the salient subcategorizations of verbs in their L1. They anticipated the sentence structures in L2, based on the corresponding verbs in their L1. Meanwhile, the Korean bilinguals with high English proficiency showed different patterns from those of the Korean bilinguals with low English proficiency. However, such L1 effect was not found in the off-line judgment task. Thus, the study concluded that 1) the salient subcategorizations of verbs are involved in L1 transfer to L2 sentence “processing,” but not its product and that 2) bilinguals’ L2 proficiency determined the patterns of the transfer.
