Abstract

Lee, Won Pyo. 2007. Involvement Strategies in Political Discourse: The Case of “speeches” by President Mu-Hyun Rho. Discourse and Cognition 14.2, 137-170. This article investigates how the President Mu-Hyun Rho employes linguistic involvement strategies in his political speeches to elicit the support and engagement of the people. After critically reviewing some definitions of involvement suggested in the literature, the analysis redefines the term from ethnographic perspective, and treats Rho's involvement strategies at both macro and micro levels. At the macro level, it is shown that new genres such as "letters to the people" initially appeared only in Rho's speeches. At the micro level, it is shown that discourse strategies in his speeches, including "sharing of language", "dialogue and empathy/ identification with the people", "shifts of identity", and "personalization of discourse", differ significantly from those of his predecessors in kind and frequency. This paper concludes with some theoretical implications related to the definition of involvement, the link between involvement and ideology, and discourse and social change (especially, democratization and conversationalization of discourse).
