초록

In recent years, memory-based (bottom-up) studies and explanation-based (top-down) ones of text processing have been in conflict with one another. Many studies have been conducted to show support for each of the two trends without a great deal of focus on how general construction knowledge can influence text processing. We describe several studies from the text construction and reading comprehension literature that show strong effects of general construction knowledge. We also present a framework that may be used to reconcile the bottom-up and top-down, and that can account for both episodic and general construction knowledge.

Abstract

In recent years, memory-based (bottom-up) studies and explanation-based (top-down) ones of text processing have been in conflict with one another. Many studies have been conducted to show support for each of the two trends without a great deal of focus on how general construction knowledge can influence text processing. We describe several studies from the text construction and reading comprehension literature that show strong effects of general construction knowledge. We also present a framework that may be used to reconcile the bottom-up and top-down, and that can account for both episodic and general construction knowledge.
