Abstract
If the ambiguity of a given liguistic expression can be analyzed and appropriately representated by its paraphrasing, it is possible to suppose that the sentences found `in a given text reflect such a paraphrasing mechanism in their organization and arrangement. Thus, it seems to be more sound and more realistic to explain the ambiguity on the level of text interpretation than to anyize it within the frame of sentential grammar. This means also that the core of disambiguation mechanism is closely related with the process of text interpretation. From this point of view, we tried, in this paper, to get a general idea about the following questions : in the process of text interpretation, what types of ambiguity can be produced, and how are they disambiguated? To our questions it is important to understand correctly of what general features consists the semantic structure of text. In texts, cohesion relations are major semantical ties between sentences. But the notion of cohesion is not essential to the definition of textuality. Rather, it is the notion of coherence which is essential. By coherence we understand that a world which is referred to by the text is contained within the interpretative state-of-affairs configuration(s) assignable(s) to that text. As for the ambiguity, we consider it as the case where a given expression generates more than one extensions in its interpretation. Thus, it is not necessary to distinguish ambiguity from vagueness or indexicality. The ambiguity is not a static phenomenon which means multiplicity of interpretations assigned by the language system, but the dynamic one which arises in the process of text interpretation. So defined, the ambiguities that we encounter in the process of text interpretation can be classified as four types, which are produced repectively (i) from the polysemy of a given expression; (ii) from the indeterminaion of a given expression; (iii) by the deviation of a given expression from its default meaning; (iv) from the logical ambiversion of a given expression. To the disambiguation of the type (i) is impotant the cohesion of the text, and to that of the types (ii)-(iv) the coherence of the text. Besides, there can be ambiguities which are intended and cannot be disambiguated. In these cases, what is important is, of course, not to try to search a possibility to disambiguate them but to understand for what purposes texts make use of the impossibility of their disambiguation.
