초록

This paper is concerning the way Cognitive Linguistics attempts to handle parts of speech in school grammar. Radical Construction Grammar discards the assumption that syntactic categories are the primitive elements of syntactic representation. Instead, constructions are the primitive elements of syntactic representation, and categories are defined by constructions. Cognitive Linguists also argue for the notion that certain words are more prototypical members of a word class than others. It turns out that Noun has the Prototype Effects, and the dependant noun is a member of the periphery. It is also suggested that some elements can belong to more than one word class at a time by the mechanism of metonymy. The rules in school grammar assume that items of a certain category all behave identically with respect to the relevant rules. But, the ways in which a word is used are often specific to the word itself. This paper examined that the ways in which ‘issta’ and ‘epta’ is used are specific to the word itself. This data strongly suggests that knowledge of a word and its behavior can only be attained through exposure to meaning and actual usage events, whose particularities are noted and laid down in memory.
