초록

The Malay language, or Bahasa Melayu, has been used as a lingua franca for trade in Southeast Asia for a good while. This is the reason why there are many buying and selling expressions in the Malay language. Based on a cognitive linguistic approach, this paper aims to analyze how the concept of ‘buying and selling’ is extended to mean other concepts in Malay buying and selling expressions. More specifically, this paper analyzes the buying and selling expressions in the Malay language through interaction between two core cognitive processes, i.e. metaphor and metonymy. This research shows that ‘COMPETING/FIGHTING IS BUYING AND SELLING’, ‘BOASTING IS SELLING’, ‘DISPLAYING/SHOWING IS SELLING’, ‘SPEAKING IS SELLING’, ‘TRANSFERRING IS SELLING’, ‘BETRAYING IS SELLING’ metaphors and ‘PART FOR WHOLE’, ‘SPECIFIC FOR GENERIC’, ‘INSTRUMENT FOR ACTION/ACTIVITY’ metonymies are used for understanding and interpreting the Malay buying and selling expressions.
