초록
This paper highlights the metonymic use of 'hand' in Mandarin Chinese for effective communication. Metonymy encompasses metonymic concepts and expressions rooted in daily experiences. It explores cognitive and communicative principles for useful metonymic expressions, revealing both referential and predicative functions of metonymy. The models of metonymic concepts include ‘the part for the whole’ and ‘the whole for the part’ in ‘human body ICM’, and ‘the part for the part’ in a specific ICM. Hand is metonymically used to concretely refer to ‘worker’ based on [the part for the whole] model. Hand is often used to concretely refer to ‘palm’, ‘wrist’, ‘finger’ etc, based on [the whole for the part] model. Hand is frequently used to concretely and lively express the abstract features and characteristics of ‘hand skill’, ‘technique’, ‘control’, ‘activity’, ‘emotion’, ‘ownership’, ‘direction’ etc., enriching sentence meaning and facilitating effective communication.
