초록

In causative constructions, the energy input and resulting activity are construed as a single event. In this paper, it is argued that the length of causative forms in Korean is more related to the forcibleness of causative events than the directness/indirectness distinction of causative events. Although it is a generally accepted idea that directness/indirectness distinction is related to the length of causatives in Korean, this paper illustrates how the causative in Korean is motivated with the iconicity principle, which explains why a short causative is construed as a forced event in which the intermediate participant has no effect to the tail, and why a long causative is construed as an unforced event in which the intermediate participant is capable of changing the transmission of energy from the head. Langacker’s (2002) Billiard-ball model is based on embodiment view that grammar of language can be illustrated by utilizing images representing elements like space, time, matter and energy. Whereas the standard view of Korean causatives was on the threshold of the classical model of categorization, the prototype theory accounts for the fact that the category of causative has a fuzzy boundary. When the boundary of the category of causative expressions is expanded according to the prototype theory, it can be figured out readily that the forms of causative expressions are related to the meaning of them iconically, as motivation theory allows us to expect.
