초록

Korean auxiliaries are derived from serial verb constructions. In serial verb constructions which describe two events, one of the main verbs grammaticalized into auxiliaries, conveying abstract meanings (see Rhee 2011). Several auxiliaries in Korean encode speakers’ negative attitude toward situations (cf. Rhee 1996a, 1996b, 2003). Tay- and ssah- are representative negative view point markers that express speakers’ negative stance with functions as an iterative marker and intensifier in addition to their lexical uses. Since tay- and ssah- have undergone similar processes in semantic extension and grammaticalization, they have largely identical semantic, syntactic and functional features. This paper attempts to discuss major aspects involved in semantic extension and grammaticalization processes of tay- and ssah- from a comparative perspective. The findings of this study contribute to understanding of development from auxiliaries to negative viewpoint markers.
