초록

The syntactic pattern [Dative-Nominative-Predicate] has long been considered as two different constructions, goal constructions and dative-subject constructions, based on their syntactic behaviors. However, in the paper, it is demonstrated that the two constructions are not clear-cut categories but form a continuum of a single category whose meanings range from spatial proximity to literal or metaphorical possession. The reference point model is adopted in explaining how the two constructions are interrelated to each other, providing the reason why their meanings are interrelated. The result of the paper provides one more cross-linguistic evidence to reference point relation, along with English raising, topic, and possessive constructions.
